the finish line is near. Only another 36 to go. I love making these little treasures. What will I find to take their place and no don't even bother mentioning anything about Jane.

#75  Pinwheels and Sawtooth

this is what less than half of what I have completed are on the wall for a preview. Because I already have 75 done, I am really starting to think about setting style. With 9 patch corner stones? With single strip sash with square corner stones? Because the blocks will finish at 6" square each, the sashing should be narrower, like finish at 1". And what colour should the sashing be? Something I call "old barn red" with cheddar-esques corner stones? Perhaps I could get the intended recipient involved in the design and colour process at this time...my own Farm Girl at Heart.

I spent the weekend scrapbooking and I would love to show you those pictures too, but both projects are intended as gifts, so I don't want to spoil the surprise.

Just come home from an Edmonton Oiler's hockey game, "we" beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-1. Go Oilers Go.

Friday night in the Studio at 106B

sewing along on my "Farm Girl at Heart" quilt. Hosted by Randy over at Barrister's Block. It has been wonderful to sew on these blocks and I look at every scrap so differently now.  How small is too small, well the pieces that I used in tonight's  blocks were 1.5". I would normally have thought that was too weenie teenie, but now I am quite comfortable doing that size.

Sewing along...

Salvaged Hearts: at last year's garage sale Kim Caskey donated several expired inspirations. In fairness to Kim, she probably taught this class at Earthly Goods and these were some of the myriad of samples that she had produced. Anyhooooo, I bought this package and made a few more pieces and by sundown tonight I will have a fabulous new wall hanging ready for quilting and then displaying at my office at the University of Alberta.

Birch Bark: now how much fun is this. A 45 piece random collection of 2.5" strips, with bright orange 1" orange nuggets inserted at random spots and then sewn together in that 1600" quilt fashion, but then the strata is sub-cut and rearranged. Thanks for the design goes to Hunter's Designs Studios for the pattern and to the Edmonton & District Quilters' Guild and their Charity Committee for the pre-cut strips package. This quilt will be used to support the K-Pic Program run at the Grey Nuns Hospital in Edmonton. Hope to be quilted, bound and ready to hand off at the February guild meeting at the Royal Alberta Museum.

Farm Girl at Heart: This is the established name for my Sow-a-long blocks that has been featured by Randy over that the Barrister's Block.  Given the use of the word heart, this will make it easier for my LAQ when it comes to quilting designs. She always does an amazing job and I need to get this finished and into the queue.

Endowment Committee Supports Guild P-Kic Charity

The Endowment Committee of the Edmonton and District Quilter's Guild supports two scholarships (Undergraduate and Graduate) at the University of Alberta and we also support other committees within the guild, ie: charity project or community service. The community service group that the guild has chosen this year is Pediatrics for Kid in Care (P-Kic), a program for children (aged newborn to 17) receiving medical care or assessment at the Grey Nuns Hospital in Edmonton. They have suggested the sew-easy pattern of a disappearing 9-patch as an easy quilt for members to make. Alongside that the Endowment Committee's theme this year is "A Little Birdie Told Me". 

The Endowment Committee brought together 5" squares of bird and bird themed (birdhouses etc) fabrics, sorted and distributed amongst our group. Two of the quilts were brought out to guild meeting last night. I created "The Dark Drake", size 72" x 72" for an older child. It also features a wonderful cozy brown flannel with small mallards floating on the back.

The beautiful little quilt shown here was made by a new member of the Endowment Committee, Vicki Robson. It is so delicate and with that lovely scalloped border it is a little quilt to fall in love with.

Our wish for the children that receive these quilts, is to feel the love that has gone into the making of these cotton hugs.

I just L.O.V.E. this quilt. Bonnie Hunter thank you so much for your time and talent that leads us to take a pile of pieces that looks like this

I could not be happier with this design (except for the fact that now I see a 4 patch that is pointing the wrong way), and thank you also to several other quilters out that that have inspired the border I also want to use; a band of purple then a row of 4 patches made with the grey and b/w scraps alternated with 3.5" more baby faces all set on point encased with more apple green setting triangles. I can thank this gal for the visualization of the border options.

Update Australian Mystery Quilt

My good friend and Mystery Quilt designer Marj O'Hara sent along this picture of me with my MQ completed quilt top from class on Dec 28. Yes that's me with my Team Canada jersey cheering on our Juniors. They played great games and sorry they didn't get the gold...but at least they got to play hockey.

I have some plans for a more involved finish than just a plain border. Stand by for those updates.

Cruising on Easy street

I am totally stoked by the coming together of my Easy Street mystery quilt, map and directions by Bonnie Hunter over at Quiltville.

Last night I had an opportunity to visit my good friend Wanda Cracknell who is making the world's most over the top gorgeous Christmas Bauble Wreaths.

And I have found a little time to make another block in Randy's Barrister Block Sow-a-long for my "Farm Girl at Heart". I used some trash bin scraps (the blue) from my sister Marg's mystery quilt that we worked on together between Christmas and New Year's. Love my Easy Angle ruler for perfect hst's everytime.
