All this delay has to do with the need to confirm the European Cookies plea. The last post was about a minor update on my pink strings.

Since then I have completed that quilt and it won a First Place ribbon at our Festival of Quilts in Edmonton June 2019 in the Group category. I did all the piecing from my stash and then gifted the flimsy to my friend Kim Caskey. She quilted it and entered into the show. She kept the quilt, I kept the ribbon (seems fair) and split the prize money.

The theme of the show was "Sky's the Limit" and the ribbons were beautifully hand beaded to reflect that theme by master beader Wanda Cracknell.
I am thrilled that Kim entered this quilt for both of us and this quilt resides in such a loving home.

I must make a promise to myself to keep up with my blog and the massive quilts that I have created since!
It seems I have a LOT of pink strings that need sewing up. And I love the analogous run of yellow to orange to pink together.

And I have completed the Squared Away blocks in pink, Baton Rouge. They are so fun and I love the movement in these blocks.
I love morning light. And this morning it was especially ethereal and was enough to make up for any other dreary day...EVER!

I have been steadily working away at purging and disposing of 'stuff', and yesterday was a big shred day. I only opened one file cabinet drawer and pulled out files that were last opened in 1999. Time to go! Not the least of which was the health file for Miss Kitty, who crossed the rainbow bridge 10 years ago.

I have put the binding on my Good Samaritan quilt. Lady, pattern by Villa Rosa Design, shown here in flimsy to finished. I love the backing fabric and was able to salvage enough and piece it together for the binding, with just a scrap strip leftover that has gone into the yellow scrap strings bin.
I think the final numbers for April are 35. (plus a few more that aren't pictured) This makes a fabulous addition to the string inventory, and when the mood strikes to make a string quilt, then I am ready, no matter the time of day or night.
It was a privilege to attend Wanda Cracknell's colour class II this past Friday at Spools:The Workshop, in Leduc. It was also so much fun to shop after class with my friend Heather. She wants to do a true colour wheel quilt based on the principles we learned in class. Here are the pieces that she acquired at Quincy's (also in Leduc).
But isn't spring just like that? Winter is in the rear view mirror and people are out and about. There are wrap up events and others just starting...ball diamonds are dusting off the home plates. Though I am not participating in any ball games myself, I know and hear that is the satisfying sound of a leather ball on hickory. Play ball...but in the meantime...

I have completed my Humboldt Strong quilt, LAQ by Kim Caskey. This Take-5 block is set on point with white/yellow sashings and star cornerstones. My wish for this quilt is that it will help to bring some comfort for lives lost and families that are forever changed by the tragedy near Nipiwan Saskatchewan on April 6, 2018.
It has also been a week of great sorrow. Sixteen people, players, coaches and support staff, were killed in northeast Saskatchewan, when their Humboldt Broncos hockey team bus collided with a semi-trailer truck. It has brought out nation to our knees in solidarity and support. The call went out for comfort quilts, using the Take 5 pattern, and their team colours...green and gold. Following the #homboldtstrong tag, there has been ever iteration of that pattern submitted. Mine is not exception.
This week I put the call out to my "Friends in White Satin" for scraps for a special project. My youngest daughter is getting married in August and has asked for a jeweled bridal bouquet. (there are 100s of images on the web if you want to check what others might look like) Because it has to built on a styrofoam ball, I want to cover it completely with white satin, yo-yos in particular. To this I will be adding costume jewelry: rhinestones and faux pearls to achieve a lustrous arrangement. I will post pictures as we move to completion.
The happy coincidence is that in the month of March I finished off the following three yellow and gold quilts.
I have drawn out a pattern using purple X-Plus blocks in the four corners and a sprinkling of aqua blues. I will throw them all up on the design wall before I commit to this pattern.

So far I have made: yellow green = 60/72, purple = 10/12, and aqua = 11/37. But I love what I am seeing.
I was recently called into g'ma duty when both of Diana's daughters had a PD day. It was a wonderful opportunity to work with my granddaughter on sorting out some salvages in preparing them to make a crocheted rug. This little 9 year old cracker jack caught on with the snip-slip-tug-knot connection that I use.
I have completed 3 yellow-green Red Cross blocks for the Squared Away Sampler. This is going to be such a fun quilt.
They lend themselves so well to refreshing my outlook and spirits. To get me started, I went through most of the stack of yellow greens and cut a 2.5" strip.

From these I sub-cut them into 5" pieces for another crayon quilt. A crayon quilt is a fantastic use for a multitude of cheery prints.

I also cut a 6.5" x 2.5" for my newest RSC obsession...X Plus Block. I found this @purplepoppyquilts on Instagram. This is cleaning out a lot of my charm squares, or at least seriously cutting down the charm square bin. My charm square bin is anything from 6.5" - 4" square.. For this quilt I have just grabbed anything from the top of the stack and trimmed to 4.5". These blocks are 10.5" unfinished. So, doing the math, I will make 100 blocks (four charms squares per block) for a 100 square inch quilt. Perfect. That will make a small dent in the bin (-400!). This means I have also got 800 2.5" neutral corners to use up. And isn't that what all this fabric is really for??

I further choose some others of my cutting campaign for a new Geese Migration block. I may have to make another of these, as I am totally smitten with this in spring green. Thank you Cynthia Brunz, of Quilting is more fun than Housework.
I have a lot of desk work in the week ahead, but will be taking an occasional breather to sew up what is already cut. To see what other fresh green happy madness is out there, click on this link, to get over to SoScrappy.

I had to choose new RSC2018 blocks or projects and I have chosen two. The very talented Cynthia Brunz and her loyal followers shared this Migrating Geese technique all over Instagram and I just had to try it. Two of the first ones complete in purple and a second in red-violet. I now need to make these in blue!

At some point in the month of January I received an on-look inside the cover of Judy Gauthier book and fell into an trance as I watched these "circles" form in my mind. I had to execute at least two to get the flavor of the block. And while I could have proceeded with 'stealing' the pattern on line, I hope some karma will be on my side when I say that I actually bought the book from my LQS. While the author uses 4.5" pieces I chose to dial it back and use 2.5" pieces from my own scrap user system and my easy angle ruler rather than the "draw a line diagonally across the back of one square". I LOVE these blocks and think they will be an excellent RCS2018 block. As time permits I will go back to do some blues.
What an effective use of simple piecing to create a great block. And mine is way over due.

I pulled out a bin of some assorted "over 10 year old" fabrics. How do I know they are at least 10 years old? Well, I recognize some from quilts made prior to 2005 and some from 2000 or earlier. I needed a plan. I hand examined each piece. If it was of questionable quality, I tossed it. Poly Cotton...Gone. I did not look back. If it was a phat quarter or smaller it cut it up into 3.5" x 6.5" bricks, and from there 3.5, 2.5 and 2 inch squares. If it didn't qualify for those it went into the string bin. Love that Scrap User System. Notice the language of that...scrap USER not scrap SAVER.

If it was larger than a phat quarter I took off a couple of 3.5" strips and sub-cut that into bricks. And didn't that feel good. This was a place to use the odd and unusual pieces. So in this quilt you will find old 1980's chintz, PEI lobster, and screaming hot buffalo wings. This is the quilt that when the grandchildren need a picnic quilt in the garden, I will give them this one instead of a ratty old orange tarp

Next up...Lozenge Quilt. I know that Bonnie Hunter had that as the L/E for 2014. I also remember her saying it is not a race!! And so while I was at it, and I needed a break from cutting, I hauled out the 2" bin and started marking light neutral-ish squares with a drawn diagonal line for a sewing guide. Shown here is about half the quilt.

The thing I learned as I went along though, and I want to share this with anyone that doesn't see this before I did, was not put dark corners on dark bricks. I lost some definition of that pretty little pinwheel that got created where the blocks meet.

Behold the completed Lozenge 2017
Here is a temporary fix to my blogging blues. (pun intended). While I have been busy busy with all sorts of other projects, I did complete three 10.5" light blue Red Cross blocks for the RSC2018. I am so looking forward to another scrap sampler quilt. My backgrounds will all be a variation of a little black on white.
I mentioned to my grandson (then 11) that I thought it would make a great idea for a quilt. His response was..."what about copyright Grandma?" I did get permission from the cafe owner to use their painting for design inspiration of this quilt.

I am making my background from a stack of yellow string blocks, framed left and bottom with pale orange.

The poppies are cut from red string blocks, with many more poppies to add. I first drew my desired poppy onto steam a seam, cut the poppy apart, then placed the strategically over the string block to capture different textures.
I will use the same process for the leaves. Shown here are some of the variety of green string blocks that I have to choose from.
I was inspired by the Spring Cleaning quilt on the left (found on Pinterest, by Brioni Greenberg) Her quilt was featured on the front cover of Quilt, June/July 2013. Isn't it a great collections of scrappy happiness.
This is my rendition, When you String Upon a Star, with a framing border of half neutral half colour added. Will be binding it with a dark yellow green.
retire now, as I am sure I will not be able to get up to catch the bus
now that I will be snuggled under this beauty.

I am thrilled with this newest finish (binding going on as soon as I am off the computer). Will be linking up to Cynthia at Quilting is more fun than Housework and with Angela at SoScrappy, who really should take credit for getting me going on using up my scraps in such a fun and purposeful way.
Each range of temperature is assigned a colour on the thermometer and from this palette I have made my circles.
I have changed the pre-wound bobbins many times recently.

I recently bought the grandchildren new pillows and made fresh spring pillowcases, and for a 12 year old boy...his first shaving kit using Janelle MacKay's fabulous Emmalline 'Retreat Bag'. What a great pattern. Of course though when you are 12, your first shaving kit should be made with Angry Bird fabric! I am hoping when he is 30 his "wife" will be bugging him to get rid of it...."but my Grandma made it for me", will be his reply.

Over at SoScrappy there is always encouragement for getting to the bottom of those scrap bins. She provides a pattern if you don't know what to do yourself. When last year I create this beauty...which I just love so much!

That first one was also so much fun, my LQS sought permission from Angela to run the same quilt challenge through the store. So I am doing it all over again, though this time with a scrappy gray background. More pictures to follow on that one.

I have also joined the Citizen's Police Academy. A volunteer education program about the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) and a brief look into all of its program. We have had a visit from Traffic Division, 911 Communications Centre, Community Police Liaison and of course everyone's favourite...K9 Unit. So far it has been highly educational and entertaining.

Since we have last spoke I have celebrated by 65th birthday. It was a wonderful collection of celebrations, with my family, my quilting friends and with my work colleagues. Several weeks long I was feted and fed at special breakfasts and lunches and dinners; I thank you all for making me feel so special. I received flowers, fabrics and was fawned upon in great order. Pictured here for birthday lunch with my Odessa and Tanea, following their dance competition...high gold!

I had a special late hours birthday get together at LQS Earthly Goods. The very generous owner and friend Patti Hansen stayed for dinner and cake and then handed over the keys and the door code. We, the senior set now, sewed on and on and finally trundled out at midnight.

I was sewing together my collection of string blocks to create this sew sew simple layout, "When you String Upon a Star", inspiration found on Pinterest.
I have continued to stay caught up on my Quilty 365 project...which in my case is Turning (3)65. I am so thrilled with this quilt (Jan thru Mar are shown here) and am already wondering to my self what will be my personal project for 2017? Note the abundance of aquamarine used in Feb and Mar!

Depending where you are in the world, you may be aware of an enormous forest fire that continues to burn out of control in Northern Alberta and Saskatchewan, so named The Beast. Approximately 90,000 people have been evacuated from the city of Fort McMurray. Approximately 30% of the homes and businesses have been lost to The Beast and others have been deem imhabitable by the saturation and spread of ash and fire retardent. One of the families that have fled is now staying at my daughter's. She selflessly gave up the main floor of her home and has moved into her basement. This family have even been re-united with the little pet guinea pig...Arty! There have been so many heart wrenching stories of gallantry and kindness in the face of the tragedy. For the little girl that is now residing at my daughters (while her FMM home is being assessed) I have made this Colour Me Quilt, pattern by Emily Herricks Designs.
I have a lot of other catching up to do, and will promise to be a little more faithful in contributing at the SoScrappy Saturday Linky party, found here where they are celebrating the completion of the colour green scraps and have now moved on the aquamarine scraps. I promise to do better at staying caught up!
Other things are out of the way for now, and my cutting is done...just a matter of getting them sewn together.
There are different types of bucket list...for Travelers, Foodies, Knitters...you know where I am going with this. Quilters at least have those quilts on their bucket list that you just have to have made at least one. Please feel free to edit this list to your own liking. But mine goes something like this: a hand pieced hand quilted Grandmother's Flower Garden (1), a Dresden Plate (hand pieced and hand quilted) (3), a Dear Jane (0), a Baltimore Album (0) or a New York Beauty (started).

I have taken the plunge. I have had Karen Stone's iconic paper pieced pattern book on my shelf for years...the book was printed in 1995 (you do the math).

So in addition to following along with Angela's RSC16, and using up the colour blue for the month of January, making string blocks and the requisite Twinkle stars, I have also started MY New York Beauty. My rationale is to following along using the 'colour' of the month and just keep adding to the blocks. Which, are coming together surprisingly 'easy' (for fear of jinxing the process).

I love those sharp pointed spires! The sewing of the arcs and folding the fabric back is a magical moment.

Thou shall not forsake other works-in-progress though. My Quilty 365 Temperature Chart has taken a surprising leap into the aqua blues this week with some unseasonably high temperatures - for Alberta. There we have it. January is done.

In keeping with all things Chocolate and Hearts and Love and Kisses, I have finally finished my Star Gazey Heartz quilt. These were pieces and parts of hearts, some whole hearts that I bought at a guild garage sale quite a few years ago. I 'edited' the stack, made a few more...and just like that I have a new (to me) Valentines quilt to display in our front office.
A good friend of mine has given me a small jar of buttons from her MIL that has moved into extended care and I have used those in a small crazy quilt piece that I have started. The background are 4 chocolate string blocks and I shall continue to embellish until I am satisfied that I have done enough.
And I LOVE it. And all 9 are now made (apologies I should have hung that a little straighter).
I have made a Fabric Blue Board and Light Blue Scrap box to create a 'pretty' side to this scrappy-string-saving venture. Not sure yet if it will also house the Indigo, Blue Greens, Aquas...or if they shall all receive their own bin. Only time will tell. But I do look forward to getting the primary Colours done first, secondary and tertiary colours all in good time. A note to self, use a cotton batting and not a polyester one working with a hot glue gun!
I know I am invested in my Quilty 365 by Turning 65/Daily Hi-Temp quilt, that when the morning weather man says we are going to have a high of -10C today, and I automatically translate that to mean red-violet circle day. We have a few purple days too, -11 to -20. I know that we will also get a few blue days, -21 to -30. Recommendations for a colour for the days that will have a daily hi of colder than -31?
Or I can get specific with the backgrounds and select this particular one to mark this -5 Monday January 18 (a teal day). Recognizing that this city's major newspaper, Edmonton Journal, laid off some very good people.
For my backgrounds I have a 'quantity' of charity shop embroidered table runners and pillow cases and towels etc. All done in wonderful jewel tone colours. This background piece may have too large of leaves, but once the whole quilt is assembled, I believe all will be forgiven and the quilt will be magnificent. Eight more sets have been cut and ready to sew up leader-ender style today.
I too have succumbed to the siren song of the Quilty 365. (See that post here.) These circles are a personal record of your life or community. I have chosen to make this my signature Turning 65 This Year quilt. So whatever the weather might be, wherever I might be, I will record it in a fabric choice made from this thermometer, with some revision to the bottom end as the winter temperatures here in Western Alberta Canada deserve their own categories and dedicated colours.
I also took a calendar and marked it up with the 30 day forecast (in tiny print) and then with a sharpie have marked the actual HI for that day. I doubled checked the past week's temperature starting with January 1st, which was +1.4 C!! But I suspect that the rest of the month (and February) will be a lot of Sultana or some darker purples.
I love them all. It is a very personal quilt for some, an exhibition of their moods and feelings on any given day. A depiction of what is happening around them or around the world. Mine will also be personal, and a record of my Edmonton Alberta home climate.

I have liberated a graph shared with me and found on FB by my oldest daughter. Her challenge to me! Well, I do not have enough of these yarns to make this afghan, but I do have fabric!! In all these Colours. So this idea and this thermostat ...
I think I will do the blank spaces to start a full month, for
instance to show that January 1 was a Friday. It was below 0 degrees but above
-5C on New Year's Day, so I started of with a dark blue/green circle. Suffice it to say that I will be working in the purple range for the next foreseeable future (-6C and colder).
And look where it has ended up...on the front cover of their newsletter and will be the inspiration for their in-store QA2016. (with kind permission of Angela of course). I'm a cover girl, well my RSC15 is.

So because the RSC15 is otherwise engaged I was busy piecing this Sew Kind of Wonderful Metro Rings to give to Hanna. It had to be flimsy-ready to take to my LAQ ...and just like that she had it finished and ready for gift giving. Bless her little 9 year old's heart she recognized it immediately as the quilt that was on 'the wall' that she had admired a few weeks earlier.
That and getting ready for Christmas with bindings to get sewn onto quilted presents for my grandchildren. I have a zillion miles of binding left to go!! All quilts have been quilted by Kim Caskey Custom Quilting in Edmonton (and photo credits as marked).

Grand Illusion, the very generous 2014 Mystery Quilt from Bonnie Hunter, itinerant and prolific quilter, from Quiltville (& from her mountain retreat aka Quiltvilla). The backing on this is a chevron blue white and grey minky and my granddaughter is going to love it.
My Little Irish Dream, a Disappearing 9 Patch using up some of the delightful shamrock phat quarters (even the thread colour is named "Limerick") that I have bought over the past 3 visits to Ireland with Celtic Quilt Tours. We always have a fabulous time and you should come with us. They have also added quilt tours to Scotland and France to the list. So much quilting fun around the world and so little time!
